This classic American barometer by F.W. Lincoln Jr. & Co. of Boston, of the Paul Revere family dynasty, displays atmospheric pressure ranging from 26 to 32 inches of mercury on its silvered brass dial. To the left is a thermometer indicating the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, as well as the incised designations for Blood Heat, Sum'r Heat, Tempe Rate and Freezing levels. Such meteorological instruments were once indispensable in early American households, particularly in agrarian regions where weather prediction was vital for crop health. While most households had a barometer on their wall, only the most important and wealthy would have had an instrument of this caliber. As Paul Revere's grandson, F.W. Lincoln appropriately honored his family's great silver legacy by continuing the tradition of creating some of the finest household items on the continent.
